The evil aspect of the Triumvirate of Magic, amoral arcane interests
Sythren is the legally evil member of the Triumvirate of Magic, which is a stranger position than it sounds. She does not corrupt the Orders of Wizardry. She does not advocate for actions that violate Order rules. She protects, within the existing structure and by its existing mechanisms, the interests of Order members who are not motivated by good or by knowledge for its own sake -- the ones who are motivated by power, by self-interest, by goals they would prefer not to explain. She is their advocate precisely because no one else will be.
This is not comfortable for anyone involved, including Sythren's own followers. But it produces a specific kind of stability: the Black Robed Order, her primary constituency, stays inside the governance structure rather than outside it. Wizards who might otherwise become ungoverned threats remain, however uncomfortably, within a framework that can at least theoretically constrain them. Whether this is a good arrangement depends on what you think the alternative looks like.
Her symbol is a black robe. It is the most direct symbol in the Triumvirate and arguably the most honest.
