Order within the Orders of Wizardry, neutral arcane governance

Valdris is the morally neutral element of the Triumvirate of Magic -- the third point of a triangle whose other two points are Serevain, who believes arcane power should serve good, and Sythren, who believes it should serve knowledge regardless of consequence. Valdris's position is that the Orders of Wizardry should be governed by their own internal principles rather than by any external moral framework, including his own.

This is an active position, not a passive one. When the other two Orders push the governance structure toward a moral stance, Valdris's Black and Grey Robed followers push back. They are not indifferent to outcomes -- they are committed to the principle that the Orders should remain independent of the causes that would use them. History has given them enough examples of what happens when arcane institutions become instruments of someone else's agenda.

He has virtually no followers outside the Orders. His symbol is a grey robe, which is either a statement about neutrality or about the Grey Robed Order specifically. Both interpretations are probably correct.
