The Giant Threat Diminishes

With magic and the Spirit Dragons at their disposal, the Empire of Venn reduces the giant threat. The empire, having achieved its purpose, begins to drift. Power becomes comfortable. Corruption sets in gradually across generations.

The reduction of the giant threat was not a single victory but a long process of attrition -- individual campaigns across decades that pushed giant populations back from settled territories, destroyed the organizational structures that had made them dangerous at scale, and eventually reduced them to the scattered, isolated groups that persist in the current age. The last of the coordinated giant campaigns was fought approximately three centuries into the Venn era, though low-level conflict continued for another century after that.

What followed is described in Venn historical records with the particular self-awareness of a civilization watching itself decline and being unable to stop. The empire had been built for a specific purpose. When that purpose was accomplished, the institutional structures that had kept it coherent dissolved gradually. Not through any single failure or betrayal, but through the ordinary process of power becoming comfortable: the slow replacement of people who remembered why things were built the way they were with people who had only ever known the buildings.
