The High Elves of the Elysor Reaches, recognizing a pattern in the Maygus's development consistent with earlier historical catastrophes, raise formal concern with the Weohstannuk Imperial court. The warning is received politely and not acted upon.

The Halvaen partnership with the Weohstannuk Empire had been genuine and mutual for most of the empire's life. The High Elves brought institutional memory stretching back to Venn, arcane traditions only partially reconstructed by the Orders, and diplomatic credibility the empire needed. They were not peripheral partners.

What they saw in the Maygus's rise, they had seen before -- not in Weohstannuk, but in Venn, in history that the Time of Nightmares had erased from human memory. A reform movement spreading faster than its founders could control. A definition of necessary compromise that kept expanding. Articulate proponents who should have known better. The Halvaen think in centuries. The pattern was familiar.

The formal warning raised through Imperial channels was received and not acted upon. The Maygus's influence in the court was, by this point, sufficient to ensure that concerns about the Maygus were weighed by people already sympathetic to Maygus ideas. The High Elves withdrew their formal diplomatic presence shortly thereafter, framing it as a temporary measure pending resolution of Imperial disputes. The resolution never came.
