The Maygus Inner Circle Disappears
PDFThe Weohstannuk Empire
As the Weohstannuk Empire collapses, the inner circle of the Maygus vanishes. Their fate is not documented. The outer circle scatters. Maygus Thralls -- individuals reshaped by the inner circle's magic -- persist in cities and ruins, waiting for commands from masters whose continued existence is uncertain.
The Maygus's outer circle -- the followers, sympathizers, and lower-ranking Advisors who had absorbed Maygus ideas without full knowledge of the inner circle's methods -- scattered when the empire's collapse became undeniable. Some were absorbed into the successor factions that eventually became the Settled Lands' current political landscape.
Others bore the marks of the inner circle's darker work: individuals whose exposure to Maygus magic had reshaped their will without changing their faces. These Thralls moved into cities and ruins and waited. The Orders have monitored and neutralized Thralls since the empire's fall, with mixed success. What they have not found is the source -- the active power maintaining the Thralls across centuries. Either no source remains, or whatever remains of the inner circle is better at hiding from the Orders than the Orders are at finding things that do not want to be found.
The inner circle's fate is not documented. They disappeared. Disappearance is not the same as death. In Year 2368 FW, with Charoth free and the world changed, the question of what became of the people most thoroughly shaped by his influence -- and what three hundred years of hiding has done to them -- has moved from historical curiosity to present concern.
